“……You’d be forgiven for thinking the passage above refers to the January 6 attack on the US capitol. It doesn’t. It was actually written about a different coup attempt, the only successful coup in American history: the 1898 Wilmington (NC) race massacre.

That excerpt is from Ms. Umfleet’s remarkable history of that uprising, “A Day of Blood: The 1898 Wilmington Race Riot”. On November 10 of that year, hundreds of white supremacists overthrew the biracial government of Wilmington, murdered at least 60 Black men, destroyed homes and businesses and drove Black citizens out of the city….”- William Schwarz
